UN Women and the Ministry of Gender are, for the second year running, hosting a visual arts, music, poetry and photography exhibition in Lilongwe.

Scheduled for tomorrow and being run under the theme ‘Freedom from Violence Against Women and Girls’, the Unite campaign is one of UN’s global initiatives, which harnesses commitments of the government, various organisations and individuals to create a violence-free world for women and girls.

The exhibition, according to organisers, intends to create a united effort through images, words and song to raise public awareness about different forms of violence against women and girls and inspire them to break the silence, combating gender-based violence.

“The ‘Freedom from Violence’ exhibition aims to showcase and educate people on the multiple forms of violence against women and girls. We seek to share images, songs and stories of struggle, as well as of empowerment and survival.

“The most compelling artwork, song and the most inspiring poems/ writings respectively may be used in the ongoing ‘Unite’, HeForShe and future campaigns. Artists will have the opportunity to sell their work at the exhibition. Musicians will be entered into a competition; the winning song will be professionally recorded and/or widely disseminated by UN Women,” reads a statement from the UN Women.

Artists from different disciplines have been submitting their artworks to participate in the exhibition that will take place at the residence of UN Women head in Malawi, Alice Harding Shackleford.
